Summer Order of Merit
This is played between March and October. There are 8 monthly competitions and where you come in the months competitions gives you points towards the order of merit. It works in a similar way to grand prix points.
So every month the following points are up for grabs:
1st - 10pts
2nd - 8pts
3rd - 6pts
4th - 4pts
5th - 3pts
6th - 2pts
Everyone else who puts a card in for that month gets 1pt. If you don't put a card in or get disqualified you get 0pts.
Of the 8 Monthly competitions only each players best 6 results count towards the final order of merit standings.
Each monthly competition has to be played and the card submitted by the last day of the month. You can play your card whenever you like during the month, as long as you play with another member of the golf society and provided you haven't already played the course in question on that day, i.e. no practicing on the course the day you are playing your card. This year, all competitions are being held at Les Ormes. Below are dates that the Society Secretary has pre-booked tee slots at Les Ormes:
Saturday March 15th (7:50am - 8:20am)
Sunday April 13th (13:00 - 13:30)
Monday May 19th (18:00 - 18:30)
Tuesday June 10th (18:00 - 18:30)
Thursday July 10th (18:00 - 18:30)
Wednesday August 20th (17:40 - 18:10)
Saturday September 21st (14:00 - 14:30)
Saturday October 18th (7:50am - 8:20am)
'Stableford' is a points system whereby you get points depending on how well you do on each hole in relation to your handicap. 'Stroke Play' is where you count every shot you play and then take your handicap off at the end of the round.
In conjunction with the Summer Order of Merit, we also have a Birdie/Par chart whereby players get points for the number of gross birdies or pars they get. 5 points for a par, 10 points for a birdie. In theory this should be won by one of the lower handicap players.
This is played from November to February. In a similar way to the Summer order of merit, players must submit a card by the end of the month. The winter league is won by the player with the highest number of aggregate Stableford points from their best 3 cards. So if you play in all four winter months you can drop your worst score. All monthly cards are played at Les Ormes. There is also a Birdie/par chart for the winter league.
The Opps pot is contested on our annual overseas trip. This has traditionally been in France, however we have been now to venture further afield, such as Portugal. The Opps pot is won by the player who has accumulated the most Stableford points over the two rounds that the competition is played.
Match Play Knock Out
Through the Summer Months a match play knock out competition is run. Players agree the course on which to play and then compete in match play format over nine holes. Each round must be played by a set date. The final is played over 18 holes at Les Mielles.
Old Gits vs Young Pups
This is played one day in the Summer golf season and is a 'Ryder Cup style' format between two teams, the Old Gits & the Young Pups. The teams are decided by splitting the available players down the middle by age. This is always a hotly contested trophy with a years worth of bragging rights on offer to the winners!! There is a claret jug trophy awarded to the winning team.
Society Golf Days
There are a number of society days planned throughout the year. The next Society Day is being held on Saturday 22nd February, at Les Mielles.
