22.08.2009 - Optimists v Walkovers Annual Cricket Match Report

Report by Paul Michel

The annual cricket match between Walkovers C.C and the Optimists was again held in good spirits on a fine summer’s day at FB Fields. Both teams were missing ‘regular’ players for this annual outing, but both fielded good sides.

The Optimists won the toss and chose to bowl first. Walkovers got off to good start in their 30 over ‘slog’, although it might not have been had Jonny Bouchard not dropped 3 catches! However, good bowling from Stephen Dunford and Neil Pugsley halted the Walkovers charge, and off another Bouchard drop, came the highlight of the innings. Jake Patel, Walkovers captain for the day, was run out by new comer Olly Meaton! However ‘microphone head’ made up for his error, and batted well finishing on 40 not out (retired) as Walkovers finished with over 180 runs. This was despite Dan Militis getting 2 golden ducks in on game... surely a record! The Optimists bowled well and had three chances to get bowling hat-tricks, however none were taken.

The Optimists then batted, and did not get off to good start at all, losing wickets very quickly and facing an uphill task. This was not helped by the amount of beer and cider being drunk by the Optimists, and the lack of alcohol being drunk by the Walkovers team... such an unfair advantage!! There was good tight bowling from the Ladies representing Walkovers, Nat, Katie and Lauren, and they took vital wickets. The Optimists were helped in their batting by big hitting duo Stephen Dunford and Matt Cox, however they were a long way away from their total with 6 overs left. Paul Michel hit a very quick fire 20 not out (retired) to try and help the Optimists reach their target, but they agonisingly lost by just 9 runs.

The game was played in good spirit by most players, but some of the younger members of the Walkovers team did get a bit annoyed, (no names mentioned) but when an island youth player gets 2 ducks, and all the 4 ladies playing scored more runs, there is no need to get stroppy... even if the ‘ladies’ were seen necking cans of lager in the outfield!!!

Here’s to the rematch next year...
